Generate a Visit Summary
What: Visit Summary is an AI generator in the Clinical Assistant panel that turns a consultation into a clear, patient-friendly recap of the diagnosis, treatment plan, and follow-up steps.
Why: It solves the common problem of patients forgetting what you told them, a written, plain-language recap improves compliance and cuts down on confused follow-up calls.
When: After a consultation, from the Patient Overview, or mid-consult from the Plan tab.
Steps
1. Open the patient's file
Location: Calendar, Waiting Room, or patient search
Open the patient's file from your schedule, the Waiting Room, or the search bar. You can generate a Visit Summary from the Patient Overview after a consultation, or from the Plan tab's 'Letters' section while a consultation is still open, both use the same generator.
2. Open the Clinical Assistant panel
Location: Right sidebar
Click the Lightbulb icon in the right-hand sidebar. Under 'Generate documents', click 'Visit Summary'.
3. Add instructions for the AI
Location: Visit Summary dialog
A dialog titled 'Visit Summary For [Patient name]' opens, with tabs across the top for all five document types, click any tab to switch without reopening. Before generating, add any key points you want emphasised in the field labelled 'Add key points or emphasis you want highlighted in the patient-friendly visit recap'. For example:
- "Emphasise the importance of taking the full course of antibiotics, even if they feel better."
- "Make sure to highlight the warning signs for when to seek urgent care."
4. Click 'Generate'
Location: Visit Summary dialog
Click the orange 'Generate' button. The AI drafts the summary from the consultation notes and your instructions, this takes a little while, so give it a moment.
5. Review and share the summary
Location: Visit Summary dialog
Read the draft, written in plain language, organised under headings like Introduction, Treatment Plan, and Lifestyle Modifications. If it needs adjusting, add a follow-up instruction in the same field and click 'Regenerate'. Use the thumbs up/down icons to rate the result. When you're happy with it:
- 'Copy to Letterhead', copy the document onto the practice letterhead template.
- 'Download', save it as a document to your computer.
- 'Send', deliver it directly to the patient via WhatsApp.
You should see: the summary is also saved automatically to the patient's timeline for future reference, you don't need to save it separately.
Advanced AI feature: The Clinical Assistant panel requires the Advanced AI subscription to be enabled on your account. If the panel doesn't load or the lightbulb icon is missing, your practice's Business Consultant can help activate it.
